Early Life and EducationMichael Ondaatje, a Canadian writer and poet of Burgher descent, was born in Sri Lanka.

In 1954, he relocated to England with his mother, Doris Gratiaen. He subsequently emigrated to Canada in 1962 and became a citizen. Ondaatje commenced his studies at Bishop's College and Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Quebec.
However, following a relocation to Toronto, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto and his graduate studies at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.
