          Tragic news for rock fans broke Friday morning after Scott Weiland, best known as the lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots, died at age 48.

          October 27, 1967: Scott Richard Kline is born in San Jose, California.

          His surname is changed to Weiland at an early age after he was adopted by his stepfather, David Weiland.

          Late 1980s: Stone Temple Pilots forms under the name Mighty Joe Young.

          1992: Stone Temple Pilots release their debut album, Core, which propelled them to mainstream success.

          1994: STP releases their second album Purple, which debuts at #1 on the Billboard charts and features the hits Interstate Love Song and Vaseline.

          In March, the band wins the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance for the song Plush from Core.
